Asheville, In Pictures

I returned from my trip to beautiful Asheville several days ago, and I have for you a tour of our trip:

Daniel and I stumbled upon this light show we've called "In Limbo" while changing concourses for our layover in Chicago.

French Broad Chocolate Lounge, one of our first stops upon arriving in Asheville (and, I expect, one of the reasons my pants grew very, very tight by the end of our trip!).

We spent a lot of time at French Broad reading and tasting various sipping chocolates. Pictured here is the Liquid Truffle, flavored with honey and lavender.

A genius at Malaprop's Bookstore came up with the idea to describe staff-recommended books, so that you might go on a sort of reading blind date. This is mine, which turned out to be 'Ancient Light,' a book I almost bought recently. Good choice!

We also saw The National on a whim. Their tour bus was parked outside our hotel, and we figured we may as well try to get tickets. It was beautiful!

For those of you who are unfamiliar, here are some of their many great songs:

Here, we have Pizza Pura, the only neopolitan pizza place in Asheville. I think they'd beat out any competition, even if there were more. It was exceptional.

White Duck Taco Shop, where everything is divine, including this particular treat: a mole duck taco with crema, slaw, and cranberries. I was surprised to find that it tastes even better than it sounds...and we all know it sounds pretty effing good.

The Pepper Jack Scallion Biscuit at Old World Cafe, where the cold brew coffee is both amazing and highly caffeinated! My favorite things to find in a coffee beverage.

The Local Salad at Chestnut, with arugula, apple, pecans, local cheddar, and molasses. The Sweet Potato Soup here was perfect, as well!

One of the outstanding, crave-worthy bagels at City Bakery. So, so awesome.

And lastly, us, one smiling, one making a face, both squinting to keep the sun out of our eyes, both surprisingly tan for what we thought would be an autumn vacation.

Also, and this is my last point, I want to stress here that my absolute favorite dining experience of all was at Curate (pronounced coo-rah-tey), a bar de tapas co-owned by two former chefs at elBulli. Pictures are not pending, because each time I went, it was so delicious and sophisticated and flavorful and surprising, that I just dug in and enjoyed. For those of you who are not familiar, elBulli, now closed, was once the best restaurant in the world. Go to Curate. It is phenomenal.

And so is Asheville.
